Hold Each Other Up

Artist’s Statement

This design is my personal projection of one of Tlingit & Haida’s Tribal Values: Hold Each Other Up. It is a traditional formline piece that I created with the utmost respect for everyone in mind, ensuring balance in every aspect. The left side represents the eagle moieties, while the right side represents the raven moieties. Each bird holds a salmon head in its mouth, facing one another to symbolize “holding each other up” by sharing their plentiful bounty. The two hands at the base represent the eagle and the raven, designed with opposing colors on each side. While the hands are directly holding each other up, they also depict unity and support for the overall piece.

I was very intrigued when I heard that Tlingit & Haida was looking for traditional formline pieces for each of the 14 Tribal Values, and I knew I had to submit something. Not only is this a great way to showcase one of my artistic talents and strong points, but it is also an opportunity to gain recognition for what I love to do. I enjoy creating original pieces of artwork that have balance and make sense within the overall vision. I hope others can appreciate the same outlook I have for our traditional artistic ways.
