Join us for the opening reception of Return to Our Roots: a gallery exhibition at Aan Hít by Jennifer Younger featuring contributing artists and photographers, including featured artist and master weaver Jennie Wheeler, alongside a selection of works created by students she has mentored and taught throughout the years.
This exhibition celebrates the revitalization and continuation of Tlingit spruce root weaving traditions from Yakutat into the present and future. Rooted in cultural knowledge, gathering practices, and intergenerational teaching, Intertwined honors ancestral weaving traditions while embracing contemporary expression through art, adornment, fashion, design, and storytelling.
At a time when spruce root weaving was no longer actively being carried on in Yakutat, Jennie Wheeler committed herself to learning, preserving, and sharing the art form so it could continue for future generations. Through her dedication to teaching, a new generation of weavers and artists continues to emerge — each carrying forward both traditional knowledge and their own creative voices.
Together, these works reflect resilience, connection, and the importance of passing knowledge from one generation to the next so these teachings continue to thrive far into the future.
Opening night will feature light refreshments, good company, and an opportunity to gather in celebration of Indigenous artistry and cultural continuity.
Reception hours are 5-7 PM, with the Aan Hít gallery remaining open until 9 PM.
More details to come!
