The Emerging Leader position is an opportunity for the next generation of Tribal leaders to gain firsthand experience in Tribal government, participate in Executive Council meetings and bring the perspective of young Tribal Citizens into conversations about the future of Tlingit & Haida.

Who is the right person for this opportunity?

The right Emerging Leader is someone who cares deeply about the future of Tlingit & Haida and is ready to learn, participate and grow as a leader.
You may be a good fit if you are someone who:
- Wants to learn about Tribal government, sovereignty and Tlingit & Haida’s work.
- Is willing to listen to the perspectives and experiences of Tribal Citizens and communities.
- Is ready to participate in Executive Council meetings and engage in the work of Tribal government.
- Has ideas and a voice to contribute to conversations affecting our people and our future.
- Cares about our Tribe and wants to play a role in strengthening Tlingit & Haida for generations to come.
- Sees leadership as a journey and wants to build the knowledge, experience and confidence to serve others.

What does the Emerging Leader do?
The Emerging Leader attends Executive Council meetings and speaks on business before the Executive Council. While the Emerging Leader does not have voting privileges, the position provides a meaningful opportunity to observe Tribal governance, participate in discussions and gain experience alongside Tlingit & Haida’s elected leadership.
The Emerging Leader is elected annually by delegates at Tribal Assembly and serves until the following Tribal Assembly.
Who is eligible?
Candidates must be a Tlingit & Haida Tribal Citizen who is 18 to 26 years old, unless the Tribal Citizen is under 18 and has graduated from high school at the time of the election.
Supporting the Emerging Leader
The position is designed to help the Emerging Leader fully participate in the work of the Executive Council. During their term, the Emerging Leader is eligible for travel expenses associated with Executive Council meetings and may receive a computer valued up to $1,500.
An Emerging Leader who attends all meetings during their term may also receive a $1,200 scholarship to the school of their choice.
