2026 Tribal Assembly to Be Held in September

2026 Tribal Assembly to Be Held in September

Published July 3, 2025

Tlingit & Haida has announced the 91st Annual Tribal Assembly will be held September 23-25, 2026. The decision to move the Tribe’s highest governing body from its traditional spring timeline was approved unanimously by the Executive Council.

The shift from April to September allows the Tribe to complete its yearly audit, which is reported to Delegates. This move also provides additional planning time and helps avoid holding the event during Juneau’s peak visitor season, which continues to see increased tourism.

“Delegates are the voice of our people,” said President Chalyee Éesh Richard Peterson. “Delegates hear various reports to carry back to their communities including the audit to share key findings and provide transparency. The move provides quality of time and space to conduct meaningful governance and carry out the work that guides the Tribe forward.”

In accordance with the Tribe’s Constitution, dates of Tribal Assembly may be modified by the Executive Council.

This decision reflects direct feedback from Delegates, many of whom have called for a fall convening to better align with family, work, and travel schedules. The fall date also supports stronger engagement with tribal programs, policy discussions, and youth involvement.

Despite the date change for Tribal Assembly, the Delegate Election timeline will remain unchanged. Elections will conclude in March 2026, and newly elected Delegates will be sworn in during a virtual oath of office ceremony in April.

The 2026 elections will mark a significant moment in the Tribe’s history. For the first time, Delegates will be elected for the community of Portland, Oregon, following a successful citizen petition and resolution adopted at the 2024 Tribal Assembly. Additionally, Delegate representation by community will reflect changes ratified by Delegates during this year’s Constitutional Convention.

The Delegate election timeframe will remain the same. Stay tuned for updates on the 2026 Tribal Assembly—details will be shared in the coming months. Tlingit & Haida encourages all tribal citizens to stay informed, get involved, and make your voice heard in the upcoming elections.
