June 19 – Tlingit & Haida Day: Honoring Our Sovereignty, Legacy & Future

Published June 19, 2025

On June 19, we honor Tlingit & Haida Day, a time to reflect on a shared journey, reaffirm a commitment to sovereignty, and uplift the voices of our ancestors and future generations. It is a day rooted in strength as a people and the enduring vision of our tribal government.

We, the Tlingit and Haida people — enrolled citizens of the Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, affirm our inherent sovereignty, which has never been given away and will never be extinguished. Tlingit & Haida traditions, languages, and lifeways carry us forward, grounding our youth and guiding our future.

Founded in 1935, the Central Council of Tlingit & Haida was formed to fight for justice — to pursue land claims against the United States and ensure the rights and dignity of our people would be upheld. Today, Tlingit & Haida is a federally recognized tribe, representing over 38,000 tribal citizens across the United States and beyond. Our government operates with a nation-to-nation relationship with the United States, asserting our place and presence on the land our ancestors have cared for since time immemorial.

Our mission is clear

To preserve our sovereignty, enhance our economic and cultural resources, and promote self-sufficiency and self-governance for our citizens.

Our vision is for a prosperous, healthy Tribe and tribal citizens who thrive culturally, spiritually, and economically.

Tlingit & Haida Day is not just a commemoration — it is a celebration of 90 years of our identity, our resilience, and our determination to lead our people with foresight, courage, and love for our land, our communities, and each other.

As we mark this day, let us remember that every step we take is guided by those who came before us. We carry their teachings, and we walk with pride knowing the future is ours to shape.

Gunalchéesh / Háw’aa to all who stand with us in unity and strength.
