Respecting Our Land & Our Totems

Respecting Our Land & Our Totems

Published July 15, 2026

When you visit Southeast Alaska, you’re stepping on to the traditional homelands of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples, places rich with living cultures, traditions and history that continue to thrive today.

Our totem poles are more than remarkable works of art. They carry the histories, clan stories, ancestors and teachings, connecting generations.

“They are ancient stories that deserve the most respect,” said Tlingit & Haida 6th Vice President Paulette Moreno. “We welcome people to walk our lands in an authentic way.”

We invite you to embrace the cultures of Southeast Alaska with curiosity, humility and respect. Take time to learn the stories behind the places you visit, listen to the voices of those who call these homelands home, and help us honor the cultural treasures that have been cared for since time immemorial.

“They’re not a prop for your Instagram or TikTok,” said Tlingit & Haida 3rd Vice President Rob Sanderson Jr. “These totems are held sacred by people here in Southeast Alaska. “Learn a little bit about the place you’re visiting.”

Understanding Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian cultures matters when visiting our homelands and will help support thriving communities today and for generations to come.
