Discipline & Obedience to the Traditions of Our Ancestors

Artist’s Statement:
The way I first imagined this design was through the traditional story of Raven stealing the sun from the box. I envisioned it in the traditional style. I wasn’t doing anything too abstract, aside from the shape of the box itself.
As much as I wanted to go wild design-wise, it was important that the piece remain traditionally recognizable for the value it represents. The story of Raven getting burned and covered in soot shows what happens when one is not disciplined, not obedient, and does not respect tradition.
I couldn’t have found a more perfect example of why this value is so important.
