Reverence for Our Creator

Artist’s Statement:

I had to go with Raven for this design. The story goes that when Raven flew over nothing, he eventually found something (though the full story is lost on me). Back then, he was still white and shiny—untainted by greed or anything else—just himself on his journey.

There’s another story where Raven makes people out of clay or mud and then flies away. Eventually, he comes back to find the people have grown, which became very intriguing to him. I wanted to capture Raven in a literal good light—moonlight, for this design—and that worked well with the overall scheme.

Raven was still pure white up until he stole the sun and became burned and covered in soot in most stories. So, I designed him as white, stealing the moonlight. The stars are a nod to Alaska’s Big Dipper on our flag. The human figure represents the chief lamenting over his precious moonlight being stolen.
