Tlingit & Haida is actively engaged in the revision of the Tongass Land and Resource Management Plan (TLMP) as a cooperating agency with the U.S. Forest Service.

The Tongass National Forest is the traditional homeland of the Tlingit and Haida people and plays a vital role in sustaining subsistence resources, cultural practices, local economies and community well-being across Southeast Alaska. Decisions made through the forest plan will guide how the Tongass is managed for the next decade and beyond.
Tribal Expertise Contributing to the Planning Process
Tlingit & Haida staff are participating in multiple technical working groups that are helping develop the revised plan. These groups focus on key areas including:
- Tribal resources
- Monitoring and adaptive management
- Subsistence
- Timber and forest management
- Ecosystems
- Designated areas
- Recreation and tourism
- Mining and mineral development
- Other resource management topics
Through this work, Tlingit & Haida is helping ensure that Tribal knowledge, priorities and stewardship responsibilities are reflected in the planning process.
- The U.S. Forest Service is currently accepting public comments on the Notice of Intent to revise the Tongass Land and Resource Management Plan. The public comment period closes March 20, 2026 – 11:59 PM. A list of Species of Conservation Concern is currently available
- Draft Materials for the public meetings will be released on March 23rd as will supplementary information regarding the decisional process for the Species of Conservation Concern.
- A comment period for the draft public meeting materials and the Species of Conservation Concern begins on March 23rd and will extend through the end of the public meeting period in late April.

Community Meetings Scheduled Across Southeast Alaska
In addition, the Forest Service will be hosting community meetings throughout Southeast Alaska beginning March 30 to gather input from residents, Tribal citizens and community members. Public engagement is a key part of the forest plan revision process and helps shape how the Tongass will be managed in the future.

Community voices help ensure that the revised forest plan reflects the values, knowledge and stewardship responsibilities of the people who have lived in relationship with these lands and waters since time immemorial.
