Tlingit & Haida Explore Water Quality Lab

Tlingit & Haida Explore Water Quality Lab

Published March 20, 2026

Please take our survey to support feasibility effort

We want to share what we are doing as we explore the possible development of a Water Quality Laboratory in Juneau, Alaska. This is a feasibility effort — meaning we are studying whether there is a need, what services might be helpful and how this could support our region.

First and most importantly, we have heard clearly from the data collected so far. Many people value the work being done in Sitka. In fact, 73% of survey respondents prefer sending samples there, and 80% prefer the Sitka Tribe of Alaska Environmental Research Lab. We respect that trust and we still send our shellfish to be tested at the Sitka lab as well. We see it as a strong foundation for collaboration — not competition.

We believe any progress must be built on communication, transparency, and trust. We are not seeking to replace existing services. We are asking questions, gathering information, and exploring how we can strengthen regional capacity together.

Juneau and Sitka are about 100 miles apart by air and 130 miles apart by boat. Our goal is not to create division, but to look at how we might bridge that distance so Southeast Alaska is better supported overall. Together, we serve more than 35,000 square miles of land and water. In time, there may also be opportunities to support communities in Central and Far North Alaska through coordination and collaboration.

This work reflects the stewardship values of Tlingit & Haida. Caring for our lands and waters has always been our responsibility. Today, certified lab services, education and workforce training, and strong science programs are ways we continue that responsibility — helping protect public health, support subsistence, and plan for future generations.

We welcome continued conversation as we move forward — for our people, our waters, and the generations to come.
Complete the Southeast Alaska Water Quality Survey

We need your input and hope you can take a few minutes to complete this survey. Southeast Alaska currently lacks a full-service water quality lab, and a tribal-led facility in Juneau could support communities in monitoring and protecting water using both scientific methods and Indigenous knowledge. Your feedback will help guide planning for this effort.

This survey is conducted by Tlingit & Haida in partnership with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and takes about 15 minutes to complete. Participation is voluntary, and you may skip any question or exit at any time.

All responses are anonymous. No names, emails, or IP addresses are collected, and data will be stored securely. While there are no direct benefits or risks, your feedback will help strengthen regional water quality monitoring and planning.
